Project Overview

Context

With the rise of streaming services, independent movie theaters are struggling to attract audiences and remain profitable.This project aimed to innovate the movie theater experience by analyzing customer behaviors and identifying opportunities to improve the overall customer journey, making independent theaters a compelling entertainment choice over at-home streaming.

Goal

To merge business and design by reimagining the theater experience, ultimately increasing attendance and revenue through practical, creative, and unique solutions.

Problem Statement

Movie attendance was declining as more people choose to stay home and stream content, rather than experiencing films in a theater setting. Independent theaters, in particular, lack the large budgets and brand recognition of major theater chains, making it crucial to differentiate their experience and leverage their unique strengths.

Design Process

Taking inspiration from The Ten Faces of Innovation ,our team adopted an Experience Architect approach, focusing on redefining the customer journey—particularly the lobby atmosphere and screening rooms.

Wireframes & Prototypes
  1. Reimagined Lobby Design:
    • Interactive digital ticketing kiosks to reduce wait times.
    • Themed décor & lighting to immerse customers in the movie experience.
    • Dedicated social spaces for pre- and post-movie discussions.
  2. Enhanced Concessions Experience:
    • Pre-order food options through a mobile app.
    • Self-service stations to improve efficiency.
    • Expanded menu with local partnerships for unique offerings.
  3. Theater Seating & In-Screening Enhancements:
    • Comfortable reclining seats to match home streaming setups.
    • Table service options for a premium experience.
    • Interactive pre-show entertainment to engage audiences before the film.

Design Solutions

To address the problem, our team implemented:

    • The lobby was transformed into an interactive space, offering a seamless digital and social experience before the film.
  2. Frictionless Concessions & Ticketing
    • App-based pre-ordering reduced congestion at counters.
    • Express kiosks streamlined ticket purchases.

    • Seating upgrades improved comfort and immersion.
    • Table-side service & premium food options increased revenue potential.
